I was 38 when I stared at a blank piece of watercolor paper and realized I was absolutely terrified of it. I had spent fifteen years as a commercial graphic designer, aligning digital pixels to the millimeter, and I had completely forgotten how to make a mistake.
When my husband asked me to hand-letter a simple anniversary card, I froze. There was no command-Z. No undo button. I actually tried to sketch it on my iPad first so I could trace it, and that was the moment it hit me: I had outsourced my hands to a screen. I was paralyzed by the fear of ruining a fifty-cent piece of cardstock. I grabbed a frayed brush, dipped it in ink, and intentionally spelled his name wrong just to break the spell.
